There being the possibility of some “ploughed” eight of us assembled by the now shrinking pond at Godstone for the short journey to the Farm.
The “ploughed” turned out to be a field that had been mown for sillage – so we had to get the pickaxes out after all. You will see from the photo just how dry it was with large cracks over a wide area. But having made the effort to travel we all had a go and worked up quite a sweat trying to crack the crust. Not ideal digging or signal conditions but some stuff was coming out.
This included buttons of various vintages, three Victoria coins, a Georgian coin, a thimble and some musket balls, together with a part of something decorative. The last item was found adjacent to the road (Roman) so could be from that era. Also, a Dinky club badge and a stud with mother of pearl inlay.
There were also two notable recoveries – sight only. Pierre found a key to one of the gate padlocks which was duly returned to a grateful farmer.
During the afternoon Alan realised that his treasured gold bracelet had disappeared from his wrist and thought maybe it had slipped off in the farm car park. Much relieved, he emailed to say he had found it at 6 30 that evening – at Godstone Pond. Lucky boy!
