Another extract from the club archives, this time from the Autumn-Winter newsletter of 1979 which shows there must have been a lot of money in shaving in 1967.
“Gillette, the razor blade firm held a “Big Dig” on August Bank Holiday 1967. One hundred winners were invited to a stretch of the south coast, and whatever they found they could keep.
Previously buried for the hunt were over 100 rare coins worth over £2,000. A further £60,000 was spent on the following prizes:
A silver Maserati worth £5,784. plus £250. running expenses.
A launch £3.000.
A mink coat £600.
Stereo £260.
Five treasure chests each containing £1000. and a voucher for £500 worth of bets.
A trip round the world with BOAC.”
It took me a while to work out that the car etc were not actually buried – although that was probably the best place for Maseratis of that era. There is no info on how you won a starting place. I wonder how easy it was to get insider knowledge.
