At our last evening meeting Geoff invited us to identify some of his finds – yes, even he finds stuff he knows not what it is. We also were stumped, but later Googling solved the riddle.
The image shows a skirt lifter. It is marked “Eureka 1877” and has a patent number. The wide end clips over the skirt waistband and a chain hangs from the loop to the hem where it is clipped on. When ladies reached a step or puddle, a pull on the chain would raise the hem thereby easing the way. These items and clips come in various forms so you may like to familiarise yourself with them.
