Yesterday morning at 6.30am I received an email from a lady called Emma.
Emma had been having some fence posts renewed in her equestrian sand school and the carpenter had lost two nails in the sand.
Emma owns a horse that had previously picked up a nail in it’s hoof and that had cost her more than £1000 in vets bills so obviously she wasn’t keen to let the horses into the sand school until the nails had been found. The family had tried raking around the sand (which included pieces of shredded carpet) in the two areas where the nails could have been lost but obviously without success.
Emma had thought about trying to buy a metal detector but her farrier suggested a local metal detecting club hence the early morning message to WKDC.
As it was so hot yesterday Geoff and I decided to attempt a recovery in the evening and we arrived at Emma’s house in Cudham at just after 6pm. It was a fabulous evening for a search, just starting to cool down and digging in the sand proved to be quite a pleasant ‘seaside’ experience! After roughly 10 minutes Geoff found the first 4 inch nail and after a further 10 minutes recovered the second. Emma was understandably highly delighted. We continued to search for another half an hour and recovered a few pieces of aluminium, a door bolt plate, a piece of wire and a pound coin.
